LYDD

At 60.7m (199ft) All Saints is the longest parish church in Kent and its 15th century tower is one of the tallest in the county with a height of 40.2m (132ft). This grand church is known locally as the Cathedral of the Marsh. A place of worship has existed here for over 1,500 years or more.

In the northwest corner, incorporated into the walls of this 13th century church, are the remains of a 4th or 5th century Romano-British basilica. The church has a remarkable collection of monuments ranging from a brass to John Motesfont, died 1420, to a roundel carved in marble by John Flaxman in memory of Anne Russell and her son died 1781.

Lydd is the second largest centre of population on the Romney Marsh, after New Romney and is the most southerly town in Kent.
A triangular common in the village, known as the Rype, was supposedly given to the Barons of Lydd by the Archbishop of Canterbury, in return for their having repulsed the Danes in 904 AD. Once an area of common land it is now a registered village green and hosts many events.
Lydd Town Museum reflects much of the history of the area and offers an interesting insight into this fascinating part of Kent. The museum has an excellent collection of artefacts, all having been used in Lydd in years gone by.
Nearby, Lydd airport is a small local airport located just over a mile from Lydd. It mainly operates private flights but does have commercial flights to Le Touquet in France every weekend.
The Dungeness RSPB reserve is also nearby which attracts an enormous range of wildlife, including unusual birds migrating across the channel. Dungeness is the largest shingle beach in Europe and is well worth a visit.

A place of worship has stood continually on this site for over 1,000 years.

The three eastern chapels are unusual in that they all contain stone altars.

There are only two other parish churches in England that have double doors like a Cathedral.

The pillars have large octagonal bases to act as seats for the aged and infirm.

The three beautiful lancet windows of the Chancel illustrate man's homage to the Saviour.

The church has hundreds of artefacts and features of interest which you can learn further about in our audio tour.

Close to the entrance is a sculpture by John Flaxman, a leading artist of the Neoclassical style in England.

The roof is a fine example of octagonal kingposts. Beneath the fifteenth century roof, the church contains over 100 monuments.

The entire east end was destroyed by bomb damage in 1940. It was painstakingly and carefully restored.

Lydd is the longest parish church in Kent at over 60 meters (199 feet). It also has one of the tallest towers at over 40 meters (132 feet).

The church is entered through large double west doors, like a Cathedral - this is highly unusual.

The church has numerous examples of masterful craftwork including intricate ironwork and numerous stone faces.

Known the "Cathedral of the Marsh", the church is dramatically out of proportion with the small town around it.
