All Saints

LYDD

  • At 60.7m (199ft) All Saints is the longest parish church in Kent and its 15th century tower is one of the tallest in the county with a height of 40.2m (132ft). This grand church is known locally as the Cathedral of the Marsh. A place of worship has existed here for over 1,500 years or more.

  • In the northwest corner, incorporated into the walls of this 13th century church, are the remains of a 4th or 5th century Romano-British basilica. The church has a remarkable collection of monuments ranging from a brass to John Motesfont, died 1420, to a roundel carved in marble by John Flaxman in memory of Anne Russell and her son died 1781.

  • Lydd is the second largest centre of population on the Romney Marsh, after New Romney and is the most southerly town in Kent.

A triangular common in the village, known as the Rype, was supposedly given to the Barons of Lydd by the Archbishop of Canterbury, in return for their having repulsed the Danes in 904 AD. Once an area of common land it is now a registered village green and hosts many events.

Lydd Town Museum reflects much of the history of the area and offers an interesting insight into this fascinating part of Kent. The museum has an excellent collection of artefacts, all having been used in Lydd in years gone by.

Nearby, Lydd airport is a small local airport located just over a mile from Lydd. It mainly operates private flights but does have commercial flights to Le Touquet in France every weekend.

The Dungeness RSPB reserve is also nearby which attracts an enormous range of wildlife, including unusual birds migrating across the channel. Dungeness is the largest shingle beach in Europe and is well worth a visit.
